Existing products

In this post i will be looking at existing products similar to the final product I wish to achieve. I will look and how the products have icons and connotations typical of the genre and which aspects I may consider for my own product. I have decided to look at examples from the bands we identified as influences earlier in the project.

Above is the album cover for 'Hours' by Funeral for a friend. The image depicts a girl opening her school blazer and revealing a bullet proof vest. This shows the rebellious nature of the music as the props and costumes create such a contrast. The girls body language and expression also shows the stereotypical teenage aggression many older generations feel. The photograph is edited to be quite dark and has very high contrast. For my own product I will also be trying to capture and make clear the emotions in the song.

Above is another approach I could take in my own work. This is the single cover for 'Scream,Aim,Fire' by Bullet for my Valentine. The cover has very little o do with the song meanings as it is merely a image taken of a building and the single itself is about war. However the editing and planning of this image is what makes it so effective. Because it is taken from a low angle it appears the tower is 'looming' over the audience which connotes aggression. The birds and lightning create a scary and threatening atmosphere. The picture has then been edited similar to the previous example with high contrast to give it a grubby, dark look. In my own work I may choose to take a picture of an image which can be edited to emote the feelings and genre of the song rather than an obvious image of the couple.

This final example shows a product which has nothing to do with the song at all. This is the single cover for 'Common Dreads' by EnterShikari. When looking at the lyrics it is very difficult to draw connections between them. However the cover is still typical of the genre as many bands have a logo. This logo is usually Incorporated in any albums or singles, sometimes edited for example made a different colour or used in different ways, for example a tattoo of the logo or a shirt. I may choose to create a logo for the band and use this as the single artwork however this may not be appropriate as the band is not as famous as the one above.

In this part of my project I will be looking at making a digipack and single cover for the song used in my video work.
I will be looking at existing products so that my product will fit the genre.
